Self-accountability

« Self-accountability is being the CEO, the strongest supporter and the police of your life, all at once. »

Self-accountability is the ability to account for your own life, as a Human Being, at all levels of our fundamental existence, from a place of self-responsability rather than the ego’s attachment. It’s what builds the bridge between the desire to achieve whatever you want to accomplish, and follow through from action to completion. From intention, to commitment, to action, to completion, self-accountability makes the difference. It brings solidity, mature authority to your process of change and growth. To what degree are you harnessing and channeling your ideas, your energy, your passion, your natural talents and your skills to transform your challenges and concerns ?

Self-accountability removes the blocks by keeping you away from excuses and mental barriers, such the victim mentality, while encountering high challenges and obstacles. It involves taking risks, assuming the results of our actions, choices and behaviours, going out of the comfort zone of complaining, blaming and accusing others, because you are the only common character involved in the center of the story of your life. The way we look at external circumstances, apparently out of our control, influence how to respond to them.

On the field of work, self-accountability is like being the CEO of your own career, by making responsible decisions based on where you want to go. How much are you trusting your talent and valuing your potential ? Therefore, do you sponsor your career and manage to develop it to assure its value keep growing ? You are the manager of your talent. Don’t wait till someone else will notice how much you do and will give you the recognition you are deserving. Take stock of your triumphs. Sing your praises. It’s not about being selfish rather honouring sincerely who you are honestly and how you contribute genuinely.

Self-accountability is an « up to me » mindset that you choose to adopt – or not – up to you !

Communication

« As a social being, master your connection instead of mastering your communication. »

Improving life, achieving goals, growing and developing ourselves require an effective and skillfull communication to avoid chaos, confusion and lack of coordination. It can make the difference in finding a job !

It is vital for self-employability and for entrepreneurs. Whatever the channel, social network (real or online), marketing strategy, knowing how and what you can bring to the table is part of the process of self-development. It is useful as well for associate oneself with the right people to support one’s growth. It is vital for our personal life as well. In to most intimate form, the communication happens within oneself. Everyone has made the experience of listening one’s little voice in his head. How do you listen and respond to it ? How do you cope with it when it gives you injunctions as « you have to do… » or « you should be more… » ? How do you let your inner-communication inspire yourself or anyone else in life ?

Beneath communication there is connection. Have you ever experienced that strong sense of connection with someone who made the moment memorable ? It occurs when you’re able to hear, listen and understand (or being heard, listened to or understood) beyond and beneath words, with authenticity, love, trust, openness, sincerity, honesty and safety. When you feel connected, it’s operating from a synergy and communication begins to flow much more easily and effortlessly.

Connection to oneself nurtures the free flow of ideas. Being connected with depth and continuity, facilitates constant learnings, evolving, sharing and developing ideas to good use. Any human being is part of the whole, interdependent with everything and in connection with it. How you strengthen your connection is what will allow you to achieve your desired identity and strengthen your personal brand in your organization. A « good communicator » has the right intentions and a sincere approach to create bonds, interests and reliability.

If communication is the question, connection would be the answer. If communication is the liner, connection would be the depth. Communication is impactful when connection is powerful.

Focus and commit

« Choosing wisely what you want to focus and commit to, brings the right expansion in your life. »

« On what you focus on expands ». Choosing wisely what you want to focus on in your life will bring that thing in your life. If you focus on your growth, your intentions, attention, thoughts processes and actions will be serving your goal of growth. If you focus on your lack of something (love, money, education, good job…) your life will turn on what is missing. And what is missing will take most of the space in your life. Choice is given to see how we personally want to look at things. Responsibility is on one’s shoulders to focus on what we really want, what we could do right now to build that and how to interact with in order to bring that expansion to one’s life.

When you connect and are clear with what is most important, meaningful and true for you personally, and with what should be brought into your life, the direction become clearer. With direction, your commitments, your decisions to act would be really simplified and more natural. The alignement of your decisions and actions with your core-values and your mission will bring you self-guidance. This self-guidance fills you with empowerment. From that prospective, you’ll regain momentum, determination and willpower. « You are your own source » and the strengths is coming from your inner essence.

How much are you aware of the power which comes from within you ? How do you understand you’re much capable of adjusting yourself so that you can feel better about the world ? To access that, it requires to create a space in your whole life : physical by allowing place and time, emotional in feeling with the energy, mental in doing things consciously, spiritual when everything you do in your very routine is interconnected to create and build your way of being.

Grab some paper and start writing it down : What do you choose to focus on ? What do you commit to bring to your life ?

Acceptance of Authenticity

Acceptance of Authenticity

« Hold the pen to write your life’s story, endorse it with your most authentic signature. »

Are you congruent with your real identity and your public/professional image ? Are you pushed to action by an external motivation (as money, prize or recognition from others) or by an internal motivation, that force which leads you to achieve a goal for your personal satisfaction or desire ? The gap between who you are now and your authentic self could be the origin of fear, anxiety, doubts, stress, detachment, guilt, shame, fake or unsincere actions.

At the basis of self-development goals, life transition, or improving your leadership style lies the search for authenticity. « Life is not about finding yourself, but creating yourself » George Bernard Shaw said. The question is highly linked with the acceptance of oneself : How does oneself accept and assume their off-road path ? Having the courage to acknowledge one’s current limitations, fears and resistances allow to overcome them. Being aligned is when thoughts, beliefs, words and actions are secure enough to resist external pressure. For real change to happen, let go of self-criticism and self-judgment.

Human nature, personality traits, learned behaviors, beliefs, needs, conditionnings, added to people, events and choices an individual met along life made all of us unique. That is precisely what built one’s background, making it untypical. We don’t like or trust people who appear false (even we avoid them !). Same for ourself. How much credit do you give to yourself or your actions ?

Knowing yourself in your most authentic nature is a step. Being true and real to you is a second step. Accepting and nurturing it is the third step to have a significant and accomplished life. When you act from your authentic self, when what you do is fully accepted and aligned with who you are, you experiment serenity, success, significance, self-confidence and demonstrate more vitality, self-esteem and well-being.

Who do you want to be ? In the answer lies wisdom, passion and commitment to stand up for doing who you are. Being authentic is about being and showing our best version. Let « speak the truth as it seems to you ».

Success

« Getting clarity on your own and very personal standards of success. »

One key component of happiness, fulfillment and balance in life is to be clear with your personal and professional vision of this subjective concept which is success. What is your unique definition of it – apart from the feudal definition derivated from the common sense of our economic dictates ? All aspects of one’s life wether health, finances, career, relationships, competences, mind or personal development are components of how successfully one is living. Zooming on the field of career, determining what is your personal standards of satisfaction at work, work meaning, personal investment and process of growth will help to reach the successful life you deserve. Then, what are you doing in order to improve, achieve and enjoy your own success ?

« Aiming high and having big goals doesn’t mean being Idealistic »

The discovery of a second  principle personnally changed my life when I was stuck professionally. As a maximizer, I was targetting Ideals. On one hand, it is what made me achieve higher goals, but, on the other hand this distortion greatly hindered my quality of life. No matter the quantity and quality of job I was able to provide, I was obsessed by what I could offer more. Never at peace, always dissatisfied by wanting the best in everything, the big fear of being judged made me counter-productive. I felt so miserable, judging more and punishing myself for not living up to my ideals.

« The concept of « Good enough » work »

The concept of « Good enough* » can be extended to the career field : « Your life’s work doesn’t have to be perfect, it only has to be good enough, even if you still aim high ». Because complete perfection is impossible, this model offers an opportunity to cope with an acceptable imperfection as a matter of fact. Even if from the imperfection of life, lies the room for improvement and capacity to grow toward new accomplishments, it could as well becomes too much and toxic. Not being too tough is already a great achievement. Aiming high and having big goals while being consistent and aware when things are good enough is deeply satisfying. Working in a non idealistic but very real way is good enough for satisfaction and brings honour and dignity. Going beyond the limiting beliefs of Ideals make move on !

« From Ideal to Good »

This concept is adressed for perfectionnists but doesn’t concern those who feels lazy in giving 100% of themselves in achieving high goals in their life. Indeed, it should not be an excuse for not giving your best. If one is under-accomplishing goals, this concept may even get away from ambitions and the will to act.

(*Donald Winnicott in 1950’s « developped one helpful response to parents who always were trying their best to be the ideal and perfect parent for their children and yet were experimenting frustration, anger and despair by seeing the gap between their ideal and the reality of what their family was turning out to be. He developped the concept of « good enough parent » by explaining how children don’t need an ideal parent, but are in need of an « OK », well intentioned and generally but not always warm and reasonable mother or father. He emphasised this because he realised « in order to become well-balanced, robust and enduring souls, we need to be people who can cope with imperfection and can resist torturing themselves trying to be what no ordinary human can be ». This concept gives dignity to a failure to live up to a punishing, counter-productive ideal. It pointed out that much that is really important and lastingly valuable goes on at a much lower level than the flawless and problem-free »

Entrepreneurship

« Entrepreneurship is a mindset which involves creativity, autonomy, accountability while navigating in the sea of uncertainty and risk. »

How much are you taking this transition phase as an enterprise ? Coming from the « Human Resources » field, I have witnessed the decline of an ancient job market where the employer was responsible for his worker’s security, loyalty and ongoing employability. The employees competencies were designed according to employers needs and wishes. The measures of the career success were status, promotion and salary. At last, managing his career was more a question of length of service.

Today, the tendency of job market is more based on learning requirements and a question of self-transferability, where on average an individual will have 7 or 8 – at least – different bosses in his career-life. In this paradigm, the measure of success lies more in retribution based on the business contribution.

Managing one’s career lies in the ability to be autonomous while navigating in the sea of uncertainties. This ability for change and transformation requires this particular mindset of being and acting with an entrepreneurial spirit. Each individual is accountable and self-reliant for his self-development.

Maintaining and developing self-employability is directly correlated with 3 factors. First, the capacity to expand new social network. Secondly is the capacity to market and promote oneself. Thirdly is to proof creativity to achieve one’s own goals. In addition to these 3 factors, motivation is an inner driver. Motivation doesn’t come from the company who is hiring. Those workers who succeed are those who are taking the entrepreneur’s hat in managing their own career. The value created for oneself and for the market is your own responsability.

A job is an economic partnership where services are exchanged and value created. It is on our shoulders to seek out and develop beneficial market relationships as the entrepreneur allocates his own labor and capital. That involves awareness, insights, initiative, taking risk (even for failure), doing things delibaretely, with care and creativity, considering the consequences and owning one’s choices. It is an expansion of one’s soul to serve one’s whole person eliminating apathy, routine, following procedures and timeserver modes of life.

Purpose & Passion

« Your uniqueness is the birthplace where new perspectives are raised. Take your creativity seriously. »

Most of my clients come to me with the mindset of « I won’t sell my soul anymore to an employer but I don’t know what I’m passionate about and what I’m supposed to do ! »

They want a meaningful and fulfilling career. They are compelling themselves to make a difference in their career and life. That is where purpose and passion take place. It’s not about saying that eveybody could make a living from nourrishing one of their passion or making a living from their hobbies or by practicing their favorite sport ! The inspiration and significance come from the energy you provide in your daily-life. Passion is a feeling, it ignites the fire of your life. The significance of your life-purpose needs to be discovered, pursued and put to use. Passion will result.

At a first level, I have noticed how my clients are freed up when they go back to the basics of their interests and joys but that doesn’t mean they’re going to make a living from this. That brings simplicity and alignment back into their life. It leads to new freedom in their day-to-day routines and fills them with inspiration to develop their potential of getting inspired.

At a higher level, to live a life with a purpose brings congruency, cohesiveness and harmony. What does it mean for you personnaly to live your life in purpose ?  What do you want to contribute for ? Which worthy significant life-goal do you choose ? How could you play this significant role in life ? What are you doing to develop your potential of getting inspired ?

This is not only about your career. It is about your whole life, and career is one component. It is about how you feel everyday in each moment of the day. Being alive in who you are and what you do, because it’s coming through you, not by you. It is about the impact for you and the world around you.

Faith in one-self

« Resourcefulness is deeply rooted within you, developing the potential of being inspired is a tool and the pathway. »

Starting at a new position, entering your organisation with your ego, it is more than acceptable from the company’s societal convention. To fight for pushing for one’s agenda and for one’s visibility is an expected behaviour from that perspective. Determination and confidence are evidences.

However, what about if someone comes in his new workplace with deep & rooted convictions instead ? What about questioning, caring, doubt and vulnerability ? Have they their place in the workplace market ? Is it possible to experiment confidence if doubt is repudiate ? What is his place in career transition ?

The reason can be understand by imagining the opposite. What is the effect of failure ? Failure does that to us. We loose faith and determination because sometimes things don’t go according to plan. We lose complete confidence or trust not only in ourselves but in our potential as well. Confidence is having the knowledge that deeply rooted inside us, without any logic reason, things will get better. It has nothing to see with ego. It’s a lot more than this.

How do you believe in your vision or your project ? How do you believe in yourself, in your own abilities, in  your life or in your vital energy (whatever you name it) ? What do you do to reinforce faith in yourself in order to make you strong and unshakeable ?

Building and reinforcing confidence is a tool and a pathway to get the best out of you. Each individual deserves the very best in life. Knowing and trusting the potential is within yourself. Being committed to nurture your own inspiration and provide the space for change is a step.
